Queer Fit runs six times a week. Classes include cardio, strength training and mobility sessions.
Brunswick Baths Venue Manager Irene Smith said the program shows what can happen when everyone feels welcome.
“It’s great to see a class created for people who may not feel comfortable in a traditional gym become so popular.
“We adapt each session for different fitness levels. This helps people feel confident while building fitness and making new friends.”
Building fitness and friendships
Queer Fit is led by instructors Lucy, Rosie, Laura and Alanda.
The friendships made in class continue outside the gym. Members also take part in bush walks and other outdoor activities together.
Group Fitness Coordinator Rosie Arnold said she is excited to see the program continue to grow.
“I can’t wait to see where Queer Fit goes next as the community keeps growing.”
Many participants say Queer Fit has helped them feel happier, healthier and more connected. They have also formed strong friendships through the program.
Allison Browning, who joined the first Queer Fit class, helped bring the group together outside of sessions.
“I started a group chat when the classes first began. It has grown into a community that is safe, fun and supportive.
“These are some of my closest friends. We’ve celebrated weddings and new babies together. We’ve also supported each other through difficult times and had plenty of fun in class.”
Katherine Fry said:
“Queer Fit is my happy place. The trainers are amazing, the community is fantastic and it’s a great way to start my day. I’ve made friendships that will last.”
Chloe Kingdon added:
“I feel like I belong here. The group motivates me to get up early, exercise and stay active.”
