Advanced swimming programs at Active Merri-bek are for swimmers who are wanting to extend on their swimming knowledge, ability and work towards becoming a competitive swimmer.

To be eligible for the advanced swimming programs, participants are required to have completed Shark level or equivalent. A squad assessment will be conducted in line with the assessment criteria by a squad coach to determine the most suitable level for each swimmer.

Club Development Bronze

Club Development Bronze is the first level of the advanced squad program. This is for students who are wishing to improve their technique in the four competitive strokes, learn new skills and build endurance. This class is a good introduction to skills required for competitive swimming, and provides a great pathway towards higher level squads, competitions, or simply just to improve on swimming ability.

Attendance: Participants are recommended to attend 1-2 sessions per week, which are 45 minutes in duration.

 

Club Development Silver

Club Development Silver is for students wishing to advance their stroke technique by improving propulsion, efficiency and breath control in the four competitive strokes. Skills taught in Club Development Silver are built on and extended. This class provides a great foundation to participate in advanced squad, competitive swimming and open water swimming.

Attendance: It is highly recommended that participants attend two sessions per week. Sessions are one hour in duration.

 

Club Development Gold

Club Development Gold is for those students looking to develop into advanced swimmers. This class has a strong focus on improving stroke technique, race skills, speed and endurance in preparation for competitions.

Attendance: It is highly recommended that participants attend 2-3 sessions per week, these are 75 minutes in duration. The first 15 minutes consists of dryland activities; appropriate exercise attire is required.

 

AquaGuards

AquaGuard is for students who are wanting to participate in water safety while maintaining their health and fitness.

Offers further personal development opportunities to either become a swimming teacher or lifeguard.

Attendance: Participants are recommended to attend one session per week. The first 30 minutes is swim based, the second 30 minutes is water safety.

Sessions available across Active Merri-bek sites.

Brunswick Baths: held in the heated outdoor 50m pool.

Coburg Leisure Centre: held in heated indoor 25m pool.

  • Assessment criteria

    To determine the most suitable level for you, we conduct assessments using the criteria below. 

    Club Development Bronze

    • 100m freestyle continuous with good technique and tumble turn
    • 100m backstroke continuous with good technique
    • 100m breaststroke continuous with correct timing
    • 15m butterfly, no breaststroke kick, arms clearing water

    Club Development Silver

    • 200m freestyle continuous with good technique, tumble turns and dolphin kicks off the wall
    • 100m backstroke continuous with good technique, tumble turn and dolphin kicks off the wall
    • 100m breaststroke continuous with correct timing
    • 25m butterfly, no breaststroke kick, arms clearing water, 2 x dolphin kicks per arm

    Club Development Gold

    • 200m freestyle under 3 minutes 55 seconds, with good technique, tumble turns and dolphin kicks off the wall
    • 100 backstroke under 2 minutes 30 seconds, with good technique, tumble turn and dolphin kicks off the wall
    • 100 breaststroke under 2 minutes 40 seconds with split stroke and touch turn
    • 50m butterfly continuous with good technique (correct timing, arms clearing the water, no breaststroke kick)

    At the discretion of the Squad Coach, swimmers may be allocated to a level when not all the criteria has been met.

    We also take each swimmer's commitment and engagement to the program into consideration.

  • Program requirements
    • Wear appropriate swimwear
    • Long hair must be tied back or a swim cap must be worn
    • Bring a towel, goggles and appropriate exercise attire for dry components of the program
