Active Merri-bek Participation Support Membership Program
The Merri-bek City Council Participation Support Membership Program helps local residents who are experiencing financial hardship access Active Merri-bek leisure and aquatic centres at a reduced cost or for free. The program aims to improve health, wellbeing, and community participation by reducing financial barriers.
To be eligible, applicants must:
Live permanently within the Merri-bek municipality.
Hold a valid low-income concession card (such as a Health Care Card) or provide evidence of financial hardship. In some cases, holders of a Permanent Protection Visa may also be eligible.
Eligible participants must be referred by an approved health, wellbeing or support service that provides ongoing, accredited individual or family support services to assess eligibility for support. Examples include Holstep Health, NorthWestern Mental Health, Baptistcare, NDIS providers, and aged care/home care services. Referrals may be completed by an appropriately qualified health or allied health professional within the service.
Show a commitment to regularly attending the facility and working towards improving their health and lifestyle.
The program can provide:
A free or significantly reduced-cost 3-month membership at an Active Merri-bek leisure centre.
Access to council-managed aquatic and leisure facilities.
Discounted concession memberships after the initial support period, subject to eligibility and review. These memberships are generally charged at around 45% of the standard membership price, with payment plans available.
Merri-bek Council makes up to 120 Participation Support Memberships available each year for eligible residents.
Speak with Active Merri-bek staff to discuss your situation and confirm your suitability for the program.
Obtain a referral letter from an approved support, health, or wellbeing agency explaining why support is needed.
Gather supporting documents, such as your Health Care Card, concession card, or other evidence of eligibility.
Complete and submit the application through the Merri-bek SmartyGrants portal: https://merri-bek.smartygrants.com.au/
Your application will be assessed by Active Merri-bek and Merri-bek City Council.
Successful applicants will be contacted to arrange an induction and receive their membership welcome pack.
Initial support is provided for 3 months.
Further support may be available after review with centre staff, health professionals, and council officers.
Participants are expected to attend regularly and demonstrate positive health and wellbeing outcomes.
A person can generally receive up to three Participation Support Memberships within a 24-month period.
